Pursuant to Alabama Act No. 2001-956, The University of Alabama in Huntsville is seeking proposals from qualified architectural and engineering firms to provide professional services for a Roberts Hall 3rd & 4th Floors Renovation, East Tower.

Description: Roberts Hall presently houses the History Department, part of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences along with the College of Education on floors 3 and 4 of East Wing. To enhance student convenience and meet current university growth, the History Department will be relocated to Morton Hall following that building’s renovation and addition completion. This Department’s relocation along with renovation of floors 3 & 4 will allow the College of Education to address the needs to that College by expanding the administrative and faculty office space and providing classrooms predominately used by the College of Education.

The proposed renovation is intended to update current infrastructure (HVAC and electrical/lighting), support current classroom technologies and distance learning while also meeting energy efficiency upgrades and data distribution. It is anticipated the existing structure will remain intact, with limited exterior building appearance modifications (addition of windows likely the only modification).

The site is located on the North end of campus. Future site enhancements include extension of campus Greenway adjacent to the building – it has recently received new landscaping and service drive access.

Anticipated Project overall budget is $4.3 million, with construction costs anticipated to be approximately $3 million of this total.

NOTE: This project is anticipated to be a very time sensitive, fast moving project. Current plans call for renovation work to be completed between May, 2018 and August 1, 2018. Presentations of 1) A/E selection; 2) design concepts along with budget refinement; 3) construction bids; must be submitted and approved by the Board of Trustees, at meetings in November, February and April respectively. A/E interviews have been scheduled for October 10th, for those firms shortlisted following this submission.

Qualifications:The architectural and engineering professional teams shall hold a professional license and be registered in the State of Alabama. Firms with successful record of performance for buildings with similar character, firms with established experience working for University systems and firms with recognized design excellence should apply. Firms should exhibit experience in renovation work similar to required, along with new construction. Firms should contain expertise in:

• Architecture
• Structural Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
• Electrical Engineering
• AV Design and Data Systems

The University will appoint a selection committee who will select the most qualified firm as outlined in the Manual of Procedures, 2001 Edition, prepared by the Alabama Building Commission and following the guidelines of Board Rule 415 of the UA System.

Interested firms must submit qualifications, along with other relevant information providing overview of firm, consultants, experience for requirements of this project, ability to produce work in a timely manner, evidence of project cost control and budget accuracy and identification of all personnel to be involved. Submissions should be bound, contain no more than 50 sheets (25 if printed front and back), and be submitted with original and four (4) copies.
